Things That Made Me Smile This Week

This Monday I had a vaction day and started sowing seeds for the far, distant spring and summer seasons. For the first time I began "Winter Sowing" which is mimicing the conditions seeds go through over the winter. For many seeds this enables them to sprout. Winter Sowing uses recycled containers whenever possible and I'd saved yogurt and cottage cheese.
Poke drainage holes in the containers, fill with potting mix, moisten and place the seeds down.
Cover the containers with plastic and cut slits in it.
Put containers outside and wait for the seeds to come up in Spring. Really easy!
I also did some standard indoor seed sowing. Here is Thea examining my expanded peat pellets.

There are pelleted begonia seeds and African impatiens planted here and as of this Sunday they've started to sprout.
And this is a begonia tuber that I'm starting. It looks like a shrunken potato now but later it will have beautiful apricot flowers with white edging.
Can you see the two deer bedding down on the hillside behind our house??
(To the right and left of the big tree.)
I had forgotten about this amaryllis and found it growning in the basement.
A Christmas present angel that will be sitting in the garden this Spring.
Valentine's Day flowers from Steve.
A little grouping on my bookcase. There is a framed poem from my sister, a picture of our late Cairn Terrier Buckley-Rose, high school picture of Ashley, and one of my many spheres. I pick them up whenever I see them and have a little collection. Here are some of them:
Besides ceramic spheres, this basket has rustic acorns made with dried leaves and tiny real acorn tops.
Spheres from various natural and man-made materials as a center piece in the breezeway.
The oblong "sphere" is actually a painted gourd but it still can roll a bit. I just love the colors of these.
Marked way down at Target a few weeks ago.
This lovely lady hangs from a lamp in our bedroom. She is actually a Christmas ornament.
Isn't it amazing how real silk flowers look!
Some cute pug pictures:
That's an empty dogfood bag that Garm is longingly gazing at.

"Daddy's lap is a wonderful place to rest and I look soooooo cute on it."
"I love Garm most of the time even though I snarl and try to bite at him a lot. He's nice to me no matter what I do! "

Bye for now,
Alyssa

Nice photos of the planting. Hope to see them grow. Your pups are so cute and you have lovely crafts there. I do enjoy doing some crafts in my spare time too.

I guess pugs are an acquired taste. The only one I ever met growled and wanted to take a piece out of my leg.

When you first mentioned seeding early and naturally, I thought of sowing grass and legume seed on top of the snow in rough pasture. The natural freezing and thawing worked the seed into the ground. Wet or rough (unplowable) lands can be planted this way.

You have done in individual containers what can be done in a cold frame, against the south side of the house.

Alice - Thank you so much for the compliments. I'm glad you enjoyed my posting.

Tossing - It's too bad you had such a bad first impression of pugs. Ours wouldn't hurt a fly.

You are correct about what winter sowing is. I think it is best for people without any kind of coldframe or grow lights setup.

Heyya there Alyssa, I do see the deer, it is amazing how difficult they are to pick out in the early morning. They blend so well with the trees.
AARRGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I need to get started of the seed sewing…
Great post…great pictures, your Valentine flowers are beautiful

Hi Alyssa,

What fun! You used your day off wisely and enjoyed yourself. You make sowing seeds look so easy!

I love your spheres and the tour of some of your favorite things in your home.

Most of all, Thea and Garm crack me up. There's something about the face of a pug that lights you up! That last photo of them sitting in the chair together is precious. Poor Garm. LOL!

I found the dear to the right of the big tree without too much trouble, the one to the left took a little more work.

Nice photos, and I am impressed that you've got your little seedlings started already.

Hi Alyssa,

I enjoyed all of your subjects - from your winter sowing to the always curious, inquiring and adorable Garm and Thea!

Your sphere collection is intriguing. I love it ... how cool to be able to look out your window and see deer. (I know they eat lots of garden things, but I love them!)

It was fun seeing what you were up to!

Dee - Yes those deer are professionals at blending in. Steve can spot them in a minute! Yup, it's time to start your seeds.....

Mary - I'm glad you enjoyed my little tour. Thea and Garm are always happy to be included in the blog. I will soon my doing their meme of the "Five Things". They also make me smile when I see them - a lot like your girls.

Tom - Wow, you must have hit that button a couple of extra times! I'm happy you enjoyed yourself.

Kate - Thank you for visiting. The spheres are kind of representation of life to me - a continuous circle. I like having different textures and types and visitors seem to like them too.
I really wish that deer weren't so destructive - they are one of the most beautiful and graceful eating machines I can name!

Pam - I'm sorry, I scrolled right by you!! Yes that other deer was back a bit and my camera isn't the greatest. But she was hard to see when Steve told me to "find something in the back yard". I'll have to take a picture this weekend of the tiny seedlings that are growing in the basement.

That's quite a variety of pictures. I enjoyed the tour of your hobbies and collections. After reading about your seed starting I think I'd better get started!

I am sorry that I didn't have time to read your blog, but I have to leave really soon. I just wanted to make sure you are well, and to ask you if you would have time to visit my blog, and if you would answer the poll at the bottom. Of the people who read my blog, you are the one I am most curious about. If you do visit my blog, thanks. If not, I still hope that you are doing well, your blog surely seems to be!

Great post!! It seems early to me for planting, even in the individual containers...but I am NOT a gardener....I want to start doing a little bit more this year though. Do you have to wait until after the last freeze before you set those containers outside?? Or do they survive...even in the cold?

Jane Marie - I'm glad you enjoyed the little walkthrough. Yes, it's time to start some of the slow-growers.

Hi Lizzie - It's very good to hear from you and I'll visit you soon. Even if you don't have time to read my blog you can look at the pictures!

Kerri - The basement sowing are begonias and other very slow growing plants. They have to be started very eary. The others go outside and react with the elements to get their germination going. No special treatment for them.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
